Community Preference Evaluation
As part of the Fort Drum Growth Management Strategy, community input was sought to help the region envision preferred development patterns and to provide attendees the opportunity to express their concerns about future development in the Fort Drum region. A workshop was held in each of the three counties in the region, including:
June 2, 2008 at the Lowville Central School
June 3, 2008 at the Gouverneur Village Hall
June 24, 2008 at the Dulles State Office Building in Watertown
During the second half of each meeting, attendees were given a Community Preference Evaluation rating sheet and were asked to quickly rate a series of images based on each image’s appropriateness as a pattern or style of development for their community and the Fort Drum region. Each image was scored on a scale of -3 to +3 (-3 being the most inappropriate and +3 being the most appropriate), and participants had the option of providing brief comments clarifying the reasons for their score for each. There were 43 images and these were grouped into three categories: 1) Landscape Patterns; 2) Commercial Development; and 3) Residential Development.
After all of the images were scored, Behan Planning Associates facilitated a group discussion about the images. By a show of hands, participants were asked how they scored each image (positively, negatively, or in between) and were then prompted about the reasons for their scores. The dialogue gave participants an opportunity to discuss development patterns and design, and provided some interesting insights into the design preferences of those in attendance.
